I had a wonderful time on my first painting class frieldtrip last Thursday! It is a nice thing to see pictures of art, even nicer to see art pieces in person, but meeting the artist in the room where their art is made and learning about their process and personality adds another dimension entirely! I throughly enjoyed getting to climb those attic stairs up into the space where Lucas Bloc has created his works for decades! Learning about the materials and his process, as well as thoughts and explanations of his use of colors together, being an artist, art history, and even the housing market, made everything more meaningful and “three dimensional”, from black and white on a page to COLOR!
Thank you Sam for this opportunity and thank you Lucas for having us and sharing your time and art.
And of course, being a mom
and preschool teacher, I loved meeting Zola too!!! It’s always wonderful to have a child along. How great that she gets to grow up with all these experiences as well!

I especially enjoyed Lucas’ explanation about his purpose for painting and his exclusive use of straight lines. As a result, seeing his paintings became more meaningful as well as visually appealing.
Thanks to Lucas for inviting us in and Sam for making it happen!

Sam, thank you for arranging our visit to Lucas Blok’s studio. Lucas, thank you for taking the time to share your art and your philosophy about creating art. Your paintings provoke thought and delight in color. It was so interesting to experience how colors emerged as we spent time with your 2 paintings. I’m looking forward to visiting your exhibition at MMA in January.
Zola added more joy to the experience! Thank you all.
Sam- Thank you for arranging for this unique opportunity to meet and see the work of Lucas Blok! Your assistant today was beyond adorable.
Lucas - Many thanks for sharing your second home with all of us today. COLOR! It was so interesting to learn about your process, your dedication and your very individual approach to your amazing work. Looking forward to your January showing/exhibition.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and artwork today. Eddie
Hi, I couldn’t believe it but tonight I was randomly in the library on CSUMB campus and there was this painting by Bloc:
Thank you Sam and Lucas for the opportunity to see “behind the veil”. I enjoyed the wide range of the conversation, from types of tape use to the history of abstract expressionism. And the work was beautiful. As Lucas promised, I did see the piece differently over time. It was a great lesson in slowing down in general, and specifically when looking at art.
